If you’re anything like me, I cannot stand the detangling session on Wash Day. So much so that sometimes I skip it altogether #judgeme #idc
But the other day while scrolling through the explore section on Instagram, I found @askproy. She’s beautiful and without a doubt, my new BFF in my head! 🙂 I began clicking through her photos and of course I had to take a peek at her blog, Steel Feather Lace Elephant. The blog is lively, adorable and full of natural hair info. I clicked on a post titled, Everything You Need to Know About Natural Hair and discovered a God Send!
The TANGLE TEEZER. When she mentioned it and its price I immediately (like told the bf to watch the kids, Ill be right back) ran out to Sally’s Beauty Suppy to purchase! It comes in a variety of colors but purple is my favorite so I chose this one!
The Results: PHENOMENAL! I no longer dread detangling my hair. With a little help from a detangling product this baby will glide straight through and help cut down the time. And the shape allows for it to fit perfectly in your palm for easy control.
I highly recommend every naturalista to purchase! Thank me later! 😊
If you are in located in the Northeast area of the US like I am, you understand that Mother Nature has not been to kind to us in the last couple of weeks. The up and down temperatures along with record breaking lows, ice and blizzards have left searching Timehop for sunny days and wondering if we’ll ever get back to that happy place again. Not only is this weather depressing to the psyche— It can also be depressing for our hair.
While it is very important to keep your hair moisturized in these harsh temperatures, you also want to give it a break every once in awhile. I have three protective styles that are fun, versatile and so I have heard are very easy to install on your own.
There are tons of YouTube videos and visuals floating around the internet on how to do these styles. They may take some time but since we’re all pretty much stuck in the house anyway— why not try these out!? Lol
The 87th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, honored the best films of 2014 and took place tonight, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Everyone looked stunning per usual but I would like to point out the Naturalistas that were spotted working the carpet. These two women are never shy about rocking their hair all natural in front of and off the camera.
Did these ladies work it or what!?
A couple of months ago while browsing my Instagram Feed, I came across Homegrown Naturals of CT’s page. In addition to pictures of beautiful women sporting beautiful textures, I noticed that she was in fact sending out free samples of an all natural hot oil treatment. Being the product junkie that I am and not to mention I have a hard time retaining moisture because of my thick strands, I contacted Daliah and she was all too happy to send me a sample!
Not even a week had passed when I came home to find a cute little package stuffed in my mailbox! I tore that package open so fast and sat it on my dresser because I was definitely not going to forget to include it in my morning regimen. I love a good scalp massage on the daily and this oil quickly became my number one pick! This hot oil treatment has 5 different oils, 3 essential oils, and 3 herbs. These oils and herbs are penetrating to the hair follicle and promote growth. The ingredients include: castor oil, olive oil, safflower oil, avocado oil, grape seed oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, lavender flowers, rosemary leaves, and chamomile flowers.
Every morning I spray my hair with my trusty spritz bottle of water, apply a generous amount of the herb infused oil to the tips of fingers and massage it into my scalp for about five minutes. Research has shown that massaging your scalp daily can promote hair growth and I am all for that! Before using this oil I have to tell you guys that my scalp was always extremely dry.. Like flaky dry. If i shook my head too fast, snow would fall sometimes. This particular oil definitely helped that to the point where I have minimal to no flaking AT ALL! The oil has a slight but not overpowering scent and it tingles a bit once it touches your scalp. I am sad to say that I am all of it but I will definitely be ordering more soon!
To order this product click on the picture below! Email her, tell her that I sent you and use the code: SKREV for a BOGO 1/2 OFF!! You will not be dissappointed.

Ive been there. Im probably in that place now. Ok. For certain Im in that place now. Ive mastered the art of keeping my hair moisturized and have perfected my sleep regimen. I have an abundance of products- some of which I have not opened. Ive tried every style in my now a little bit longer than an TWA fro and yet Im still bored!
For the past week Ive been rocking a twist out and figured that I would just let my hair do what it wants to do. And guess what? Its working! Who says that you have to style it everyday. I dont have time for it. I have teetered on the line of maybe getting it chopped into a tapered cut. But on the other hand- I want to get braids again.
All in all, Im figuring on just letting my hair does what it wants to do. Low manipulation, twist outs, water and oil. Thats it. Not to mention these prenatal vitamins are without a doubt aiding in the growth process!
While searching on YouTube, I found a cute tutorial on some easy styles for short natural hair (since Ive passed the TWA stage-Yipee!)
Check it out Below:
SO its been a year now since I took the leap and did my BIG CHOP!! AHHHHHHHH! I still remember back to that day. Even though I would like to forget sometimes that it ever happened- it did and it changed me forever. This year has been and up and down and sometimes stagnant roller coaster ride for me on a physical and mental basis. I have learned so much about my hair and most importantly- MYSELF.
Needless to say, I have not been very active on here or any other social media sites. Ive totally fell off with updating but lets just say that Ive gotten a bit of motivation in the past few weeks and IM BACK. And Im back with a totally different vision and direction for this site. Please stay tuned for a major revamp and maybe even a name change in the very near future. Ive come to the conclusion that life is way too short to not do what you want. There is no certain niche that you have to stay in. No lane- Pave your own. And thats exactly what I intend to do.
In the meantime, I am going to continue blogging, reblogging, FB’ing (yea…that) and IG’ing (and that..) about everything Pretty and Natural. Whether the changes are subtle or suddenly, Im hoping that each of you (yes I still see the steady stream of visitors each day- THANK YOU!) stick along for this ride.
Until next time,
Ive touched on this topic before in 5 Things to Consider Before You Decide To Do the BIG CHOP!. But I see alot of people who comment on my Instagram page and lots of others about how they cant wait until their hair gets to a certain length. Its great to be inspired and aspire because that is what this blog is all about. But to be honest, having natural hair and maintaining it is a lot of work. And if you’re a natural then you know this is true!
I dont know about everyone else but Im enjoying every bit of my texture and every bit of each stage. I have found the perfect oil to keep it moisturized during the day and I have FINALLY mastered the art of PROPER detangling. I love trying out new products to see what works for me and experimenting with new ways to style my TWA. I CAN wait to reach that lengthy stage because in all actuality I feel as if Ill be learning my hair all over again. And its taken me almost a year to perfect this stage. LOL
Im saying all this to say-Embrace YOUR Textured Journey. Learn what works for you hair and perfect a regimen thas good for you.
Lupita Nyong’o has signed on as the New Ambassadress of Lancôme! Her year is not only proving to be very noteworthy but also LUCRATIVE. There is no doubt in my mind that in the last few months she has had a number of beaty, fashion and dacting roles to choose from. Her elegance, grace and style have been a forced to reckoned with- setting a new standard in the beauty world.
Nyong’o released a statement by the French beauty house, “I am truly honored to join the Maison Lancôme, a brand with such a prestigious history that I have always loved. I am particularly proud to represent its unique vision for women and the idea that beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman’s freedom to be herself.”
Ads are set to be released in September. And I can bet that this is not the last that we will see from her. Im truly excited for her and cant wait for more to come from this beauty!
Not one but three fearlessly natural beauties are gracing the May covers of Essence magazine! Erykah Badu, Ledisi and Solange Knowles- all of who are amazing artists- are honored with three separate covers that hit the newstands on April 1st! Not only are the covers stunning but they capture each artist rocking their natural hair. These are for sure collector’s issues!
Below are the behind the scenes action for each of the ladies:
So I have the daunting task of searching for a new job. Anybody that has been in this position knows that this can be nerve racking! The idea of waking up each day and checking your inbox to see if anyone has gotten back to you. Or applying for hundreds of jobs that you think you may qualify for but not one of those companies gives you a callback. The process can lead you to drink. Seriously.
When I started, I was faced with a number of questions: How will they react to my hair? Should I straighten it? Push it back with a headband? Do I wear a wig? Will my hair affect me not getting this position? Will I catch them looking at my hair? And YES! All of these questions flew through my head at the same damn time.
I quickly pushed all of these thoughts out of my head because:
1. I LOVE my hair.
2: Theres no way Im going to apply heat to my hair everyday especially when Ive been on a no heat strike since July.
3. I dont have any extra money to buy a wig- not a good one anyway! Lol
4. My resume speaks for itself. If I can be passed over for a position because of my hair then I wasnt meant to work for that company anyway. (Cocky much? I guess. Lol)
In other words, the answer to all of my questions: I dont care. No. No. No. I dont care. I dont care. Lol
Let me hear from you! Any others have reservations about how their natural hair affects their professional appearance? I wanna know!
Not at all close to what my mini Fro looks like but just as a reference… lol
